ERA DECEMBER 2385

The Federation was founded as a promise between worlds that had learned, sometimes painfully, that survival could not depend on isolation. By 2385 that promise has been tested by war, invasion, political collapse, and fear. The Federation has not emerged untouched. It has emerged altered, poorer in ships and lives than it wants to admit, but still committed to the principles that made it worth defending.

The road to USS Ithaca begins long before the ship reaches the Vesper March. It begins with the Federation's founding ideals, passes through the Dominion War and The Borg Invasion of 2381, and arrives in the uneasy hope following the Fall of 2385.

Historical Track

2161	The United Federation of Planets is founded by Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, Tellar Prime, and Alpha Centauri after the Earth-Romulan War. Its purpose is cooperation between worlds that had learned how dangerous mistrust could become.
2293	The Khitomer Accords end the long Federation-Klingon Cold War and create the alliance structure that still anchors Federation security in the late 24th century.
2365-2367	The Federation makes first contact with the Borg, then suffers the Battle of Wolf 359. Starfleet's confidence is shaken, and a generation of officers grows up knowing that exploration can find threats as well as wonders.
2373-2375	The Dominion War devastates the Alpha Quadrant. The Federation survives, but the war changes Starfleet, Cardassia, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Star Empire permanently.
2378	USS Voyager returns from the Delta Quadrant. The homecoming is a moment of joy after years of war, and also brings new knowledge, new technologies, and new questions about the galaxy beyond Federation space.
2379-2380	The Shinzon crisis kills the Romulan Senate and destabilises the Star Empire. Donatra's breakaway Imperial Romulan State emerges in the aftermath, leaving two Romulan governments facing a wounded quadrant.
2381	In The Borg Invasion of 2381, the Collective returns as an extinction-level threat. Sixty-three billion sentient beings die before the Caeliar resolution dissolves the Collective. The Borg are gone, but the Federation and its neighbours are left traumatised and displaced.
2381-2385	The Typhon Pact forms as a rival bloc to the Federation and Khitomer Accords powers. The following years become a cold war of diplomacy, intelligence operations, technological competition, and pressure along contested frontiers.
2382-2385	Andor secedes from the Federation during the reproductive crisis, then returns after a viable cure is delivered in 2385. Its return becomes one of the first clear signs that the Federation's wounds can heal.
2383-2385	The original Deep Space 9 is destroyed and replaced by a new starbase-class facility. Its dedication in 2385 is meant to symbolise resilience, but instead becomes the opening scene of a political crisis.
August-November 2385	President Nanietta Bacco is assassinated. The crisis that follows, known as the Fall, exposes an attempted capture of Federation power by fear, deception, and covert violence.
Late 2385	Kellessar zh'Tarash is elected Federation President after Andor's return. Her administration begins with a call to return to first principles: exploration, law, service, diplomacy, and trust.
December 2385	USS Ithaca begins operations in the Vesper March. The assignment is part of Starfleet's renewed outward turn into regions that need attention, care, and clear-eyed curiosity.

What Changed

The Damage Starfleet lost ships, officers, and institutional confidence across successive crises. Billions of civilians were displaced by the Borg invasion and its aftermath. The Typhon Pact turned post-invasion instability into a lasting strategic rivalry. Andor's secession proved that even founding members could lose faith in the Federation. The Fall exposed how fear could be used to deform Federation law from within.

The Response The Federation recommitted to democratic government after the attempted coup collapsed. Andor's return showed that membership could be chosen again, not merely inherited. Starfleet began shifting resources back towards exploration, survey, relief, and diplomacy. Frontier regions gained new importance as places of recovery, resettlement, and renewed contact. The Federation's hope is no longer innocence. It is a discipline practised after loss.

Campaign Era Implications

The Federation	Still powerful, still principled, but exhausted. It is trying to recover without becoming smaller, harsher, or more suspicious than its ideals allow.
Starfleet	Stretched between defence, relief, diplomacy, scientific survey, and renewed exploration. A small ship in a quiet sector may still be part of a much larger strategic turn.
The Typhon Pact	Not at open war with the Federation, but active, watchful, and prepared to turn local uncertainty into leverage.
The Frontier	Places like the Vesper March matter because the Federation's future is not only decided at Earth, Qo'noS, or Romulus. It is also decided where refugees settle, neighbours negotiate, and small ships choose what kind of help to be.
