The Bynars

The Bynars are a humanoid species native to Bynaus. They are distinguished by extensive cybernetic augmentation and a long-established integration of computer technology into everyday life. Federation records have consistently noted the species' reliance upon sophisticated planetary computer systems and their tendency to operate in pairs.

Much of what is publicly known about the Bynars comes from technical and scientific exchanges with the Federation rather than from detailed cultural studies. As a result, many aspects of Bynar society remain less familiar to outsiders than those of larger Federation member species.

2364 Enterprise-D Incident

Bynaus is closely associated with one of the most widely studied incidents in the history of Starbase 74.

In 2364, an electromagnetic threat originating within the Beta Magellan system endangered the planetary computer infrastructure upon which Bynar society depended. Facing the possibility of catastrophic data loss, a group of Bynars covertly transferred a complete backup of their planetary database into the computer systems of the USS Enterprise-D while the vessel was undergoing upgrades at Starbase 74.

The action resulted in the unauthorised departure of the Enterprise from the station and temporarily created the appearance of a starship hijacking. The situation was ultimately resolved without loss of life, and the stored data was successfully returned to Bynaus.

The incident remains notable for the way it highlighted both the strengths and vulnerabilities of Bynar civilisation. It demonstrated remarkable technical ingenuity, while also revealing the risks created by heavy dependence upon a single critical infrastructure system during a crisis.

Role in the Vesper March

Bynaus occupies a distinctive position within the inner Vesper March. Unlike Starbase 74, it is not primarily a Starfleet installation, and unlike Eventide, it is not a frontier colony. Instead, it represents one of the region's longest-established Federation member worlds.
